Tout d’abord, comment te sens-tu en Belgique ? Tu es un jeune joueur et vivre à l’étranger peut être déstabilisant…
Dès que je suis arrivé en Belgique, je me suis senti comme chez moi. Le club a pris soin de moi dès le premier jour, et j’ai le sentiment de faire partie d’une famille. Bien sûr, au début c’était un challenge, quand tout était nouveau pour moi, ajouté au fait de ne pas avoir ma famille ni mes amis de Norvège autour de moi tout le temps… Mais la phase d’adaptation à mon nouveau club, au nouveau staff, aux joueurs, au championnat, au pays, en vivant seul dans un appartement, s’est bien passée et rapidement. J’en suis content et malgré ces circonstances, j’ai réussi à me concentrer et à m’épanouir dès le premier jour, en janvier.
Tu fais des débuts impressionnants avec Genk ! Tu es déjà un joueur clé de l’équipe et tu as pu montrer tes qualités en Europa League… Pensais-tu que ce serait si rapide ?
J’ai travaillé dur depuis que je suis arrivé et j’ai progressé en tant que footballeur, en étant concentré et en demandant à apprendre tous les jours dans cet environnement, avec beaucoup de bons jeunes joueurs et un staff qui a une incroyable connaissance du football.
Avant de signer en Belgique, tu as été approché par des équipes comme West Ham ou Everton. Pourquoi avoir choisi Genk ?
J’ai voulu en savoir plus sur Genk immédiatement après avoir entendu parler de leur intérêt pour moi. Tant de bonnes choses ont attiré mon attention ! Cela a été un choix facile de leur dire « oui ». J’ai tout de suite pensé que ce club spécial, cette équipe jeune avec beaucoup de potentiel et ce championnat de Belgique était la bonne marche à gravir.
Avec tes performances récentes, ton téléphone et celui de ton agent ne doivent pas arrêter de sonner ! Est-ce parfois difficile de garder la tête sur les épaules ?
Haha ! Je ne pense pas à cela, je ne passe pas de temps sur ce genre de choses… Le plus important pour moi est de rester focalisé sur le travail chaque jour. Être toujours le mieux préparé pour le prochain entraînement ou le prochain match, être professionnel dans tout ce que je fais.
Quels sont les championnats ou les équipes qui te font rêver ?
Un jour, je veux jouer dans l’un des grands championnats : L’Espagne, la France, l’Angleterre, l’Allemagne ou l’Italie. Et aussi jouer la Champions League !
Et as-tu un joueur favori ?
Je n’en ai pas vraiment. Je regarde beaucoup de foot et la liste des joueurs que j’observe particulièrement est longue ! Quelques-uns d’entre eux sont Busquets, Iniesta, Kroos, Modric, Pogba et Yaya Toure.
Ton ancien coach à Vålerenga, Kjetil Rekdal, a dit qu’il voyait du Patrick Vieira dans ton jeu. Cela signifie beaucoup pour nous, Français ! Es-tu d’accord avec cette comparaison ?
Héhé ! C’est un beau compliment ! Patrick Vieira est un joueur de légende, mais j’essaye juste d’être la meilleure version possible de moi-même.
D’après toi, dans quels domaines dois-tu progresser ?
Je dois améliorer mon jeu de tête et mon pied gauche. Je travaille aussi mon attaque, avec des frappes lointaines et des courses vers la surface qui me permettraient d’offrir des passes décisives.
Suis-tu la Ligue 1 ? Avons-nous une chance de te voir dans un club français à l’avenir ?
Je regarde la Ligue 1 et je suis très impressionné par le niveau du championnat. Jouer dans une telle ligue un jour serait fantastique ! L’Equipe de France est également très attractive avec beaucoup de « top class players » associés avec beaucoup de talent.
Tu as fait tes débuts en sélection de Norvège en mars. Quelle a été ta réaction lorsque tu as appris que tu étais convoqué ?
C’était un immense rêve devenu réalité ! Un moment de fierté pour lequel j’ai travaillé depuis que j’ai commencé le foot, enfant. Difficile de décrire ce que j’ai ressenti lorsque j’étais là, avec le maillot de l’équipe nationale de Norvège, sur le point de représenter mon pays dans un match de qualification à la Coupe du Monde ! Un sentiment absolument spécial et incroyable !
D’après toi, de quoi la Norvège a-t-elle besoin pour se qualifier à nouveau pour une grande compétition ?
Nous avons un grand coach, avec un parcours fantastique à la tête d’équipes nationales et beaucoup d’expérience ! (Lars Lagerbäck, actuel sélectionneur de la Norvège, a notamment emmené l’Islande en ¼ de finale de l’Euro 2016. ndlr) Il sait ce que requiert une qualification pour une grande compétition. Nous avons une équipe excitante, avec du potentiel et un bon mélange entre joueurs expérimentés et jeunes.
J’ai vu en janvier que tu étais toujours étudiant. Est-ce encore le cas ? Vas-tu retourner en Norvège pour passer des examens ?
Il me restait un semestre à valider. J’ai décidé de mettre ça de côté pendant un moment quand j’ai signé à Genk, car je savais à quel point ma vie allait changer. Être un footballeur professionnel nécessite concentration, dévouement, travail acharné. Il faut être un athlète 24 heures sur 24. Dans le futur, je veux finir l’école, car les douze années et demie que j’y ai passées ont été très importantes pour ce que je suis aujourd’hui et les valeurs, l’attitude et la morale que je défends.
Quel est ton meilleur souvenir en tant que fan de foot ? Et en tant que joueur ?
À cet instant, je n’ai pas de souvenir particulier qui me revient en tant que fan. En tant que joueur, mes meilleurs moments sont mon match avec l’équipe nationale et les deux ¼ de finale d’Europa League joués avec Genk face au Celta Vigo. Le match amical à Vålerenga face au Real Madrid (en août 2015, ndlr), dans un Ullevaal Stadium plein, était génial également !
Quand et pourquoi t’es-tu mis au football ?
Quand j’étais plus jeune, mon frère, de 7 ans mon aîné, m’emmenait avec lui jouer au foot et au basket. Il m’a toujours poussé et je suis rapidement tombé amoureux du football. Je l’observais et je voulais devenir aussi bon que lui. Quand l’école a commencé, mes amis et moi nous sommes mis à tout le temps jouer au foot dans la cour, puis ensemble dans une équipe.
Donne-moi un film, une chanson, un livre !
Choix difficile… « Intouchables », « Django Unchained » et « Gladiator » sont trois bons films. La chanson sera « September » d’Earth Wind & Fire, et le livre « Moi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic ».
Et enfin, des éléments qui permettront aux fans de foot français de mieux te connaître !
J’ai joué pendant longtemps au basket, car mon père, ma mère et mon frère y ont joué à haut niveau. Quand j’ai eu 13-14 ans, j’ai dû choisir entre basket et foot, car les deux me prenaient trop de temps. Je suis également à moitié suédois. J’adore passer du temps en famille et avec mes amis, rire un bon coup et rencontrer de nouvelles personnes.
S’il continue à gravir les échelons avec tant d’humilité, nul doute qu’un avenir radieux s’offre à ce garçon. Clubs de Ligue 1, faites-vous plaisir !

First, how do you feel in Belgium ? You’re a young player, and living in an other country, can be destabilizing…
Since I came to Belgium i’ve felt very home here. The club took care of me from day one and I feel that I am part of a family. Of course it was a challenge in the beginning when everything was new for me and not having my family and friends from Norway around me all the time. But the adaptation phase with a new club, the staff and players, the league, the country, living in an apartment alone etc… went quickly and very well. I am happy for that and under these circumstances i’ve been able to focus and develop from the first day in January.
You’re making impressive debut with Genk ! You’re already a key player for the team and showed your qualities in Europa League. Did you think that it would be so quick ?
I have worked hard since I came to Genk and developed as a footballer by being focused and willing to learn everyday in this environment with a lot of good young players and a staff with huge knowledge about football.
Before you went to Belgium, you were linked with teams like West Ham and Everton, but you chose Genk. Why ?
I got to know more about Genk directly after I heard about their interest. It was so many good things about the club that caught my interest. For me it was an easy choice to say yes to Genk. I thought from the beginning that this special club, a young team with a lot potential and the Belgian league was the next right step to take.
With your recent performances, your or your agent’s phone must be ringing all the time ! Is it difficult to keep your head on your shoulders sometimes ?
Haha, I don’t think about that or use time on such things. For me the most important thing is to keep focus and my concentration on hard work every day, be prepared in the best way for next training and next game all the time, being professional in everything I do.
What are the leagues, or the teams that make you dream.
One day I want to play in one of the top leagues like Spain, France, England, Germany and Italy and also in the Champions League.
And what is your favorite player ?
I don’t have one real favorite player. I watch a lot of football and the list of players I look up to is long. Some of them are Busquets, Iniesta, Kroos, Modric, Pogba and Yaya Toure.
Your former manager in Valerenga, Kjetil Rekdal, said that he sees some Patrick Vieira in your game. This means a lot for us, french ! Do you agree with this comparison ?
Hehe, that is a nice compliment. Patrick Vieira is a legendary player, but I am just trying to be the best version of myself.
According to you, in which parts of your game do you need to progress ?
My heading-game and my left foot have to become better. I am working on attacking the goal with shoots from distance and also making the runs to the box so I can be able to give assists.
Do you follow french Ligue 1 ? Do we have a chance to see you in a french club in the future ?
I watch some Ligue 1 football and I am very impressed with the level of the league. To play in a league like Ligue 1 one day would be fantastic. The French national team is also very exciting to watch with many top class players combined with a lot of talent.
You also made your debut with the national team in march. What was your feeling, your reaction, when you were informed about your selection ?
It was a big dream coming true. A proud moment and something I worked for since I started playing football as a child. Difficult to describe the feeling I had when I stood there with the Norwegian national team jersey on and was going to represent my country in a World Cup qualification game. A completely special and unbelievable feeling.
According to you, what do Norway need to qualify again for a big competition ?
We have a great coach now with a fantastic national team record and highly experienced. He knows what it requires to become good enough to qualify for big competitions. We have an exciting team now with potential and a good balance of older and younger players.
I saw in january, that you’re still learning in highschool. Is it still the case ? Do you go back to Norway to pass your exam ?
I had half a year left at high school in Norway. I decided to put it aside for a period when I signed for Genk because I knew how different life was going to be. The focus, dedication and hard work – to be an athlete 24 hours a day that requires to be a professional footballer. In the future I want to finish school because my 12 1/2 years in school in Norway have been very important for who I am today and what kind of values, attitude and morale I stand for.
What is your best memory as a football fan ? And as a player ?
At the moment I don’t have any specific memory as a football fan. As a player the biggest moments were when I played with the national team and when we played the two quarterfinals in Europa League against Celta Vigo. The friendly game against Real Madrid with a capacity crowd at Ullevaal Stadium in Norway with Vålerenga was also great.
When and why did you come to football ?
When I was younger my 7 year older brother took me with him when he played football and basketball. He has always pushed me and I fell early in love with the game of football. I looked up to him and wanted to become as good as him. When school started, my friends and I started to play football all the time at school and also in a team together.
One film, one song, one book !
A difficult one… too many to choose between. Intouchables, Django Unchained and Gladiator are three good films. The song must be September – Earth Wind & Fire and the book is «I am Zlatan Ibrahimovic».
And finally, help french people to know your personality !
I played basketball for many years because my father, mother and brother have played top basketball. When I was 13-14 years old I had to choose between football and basketball because both sports took so much time. I am also half Swedish and I love to spend time with family and friends, have a laugh and get to know new people.
