While the media increasingly focus on women’s football, the players still face many detractors, which keeps them mostly in anonymity… This season no less than five Icelandic players have played in D1 Arkema, starring Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir, recent European champion with OL. Today we introduce you to Andrea Rán Snæfeld Hauksdóttir, a player with a singular background, who has taken part every game in their entirety since arriving on loan in January from Breiðablik.

First of all, can you present yourself and describe your journey from Breiðablik to Le Havre ?

The journey has been a very good experience for me. I think playing in the US and for a top team in Iceland has prepared me in a way that I am ready to take on a bigger challenge.

So what made you want to sign here in Le Havre ?

Playing soccer in one of the best leagues in the world had a huge impact on my decision. I really like challenges and this was an opportunity for me to do what I love.

How this transfer come about ? Was the presence of Berglind (Þorvaldsdóttir) and Anna (Kristjánsdóttir) a big factor ?

Berglind contacted me because they needed a midfielder.

You’re only there until the end of the season, so what are your goals personally, with Le Havre ?

My goal is to help the team to stay in D1.

And what are your plans after this ?

I go back home to Iceland and I play with my team Breiðablik this summer.

You studied in the United States, what did it bring you ? Concerning studies and the sporting side.

I was able to do what I love the most and get my degree at the same time. Also, I made lifelong friendships that I developed throughout my college career. We have so many memories that will never be forgotten. Some of those memories include traveling around the US, living together at the dorms, moving in together, winning and losing moments, dying in preseason, accomplishing team goals, crying because it’s all over, but also laughing because it all happened…

So you played in the US and in Iceland so for you, is the women’s football more followed and more recognized by people in the US or in France and in Iceland or in France ?

AH : I would say that France and my club team in Iceland does a good job advertising our games but in the US we had our own media. The atmosphere was very unique. We had a whole school and people from the city supporting us. It was a very professional environment and we had a lot of fans and followers.

A lot of people compare women’s football and men’s football, do you think it’s comparable ? And why ?

I really do not see that much of difference. For me it’s the same sport with the same goals.

A lot of people don’t like women’s football, criticize and discredit it, what does that do to you ? What do you think of this ?

I think people who do that are ignorant. I think they are close minded and not willing to give girls the same opportunity as boys. This has helped me in a way that I am willing to fight with the women standing next to me to make a better and brighter days for the next generation.

We wish Andrea Hauksdóttir the best for the rest of her career and thank her for this exchange. The 25-year-old midfielder has now returned to Iceland at Breiðablik but we hope we can find her again on French pitches in the women’s D1. You can follow her on her Instagram account.
