Né en 2006, celui que l’on surnomme déjà « Magic » Galdur est considéré comme l’un des plus grands talents islandais de sa génération. Le natif des Îles Vestmann, Ásgeir Galdur Guðmundsson partira au FC Copenhague cet été après s’être révélé sous les couleurs de Breiðablik. Lui qui préfère qu’on l’appelle Galdur plutôt qu’Ásgeir, revient avec nous sur son parcours, son modèle et ses ambitions…

Pour commencer, peux-tu te présenter ?
Je m’appelle Ásgeir Galdur Guðmundsson, j’ai 16 ans, je joue pour Breiðablik mais cet été je partirai pour le FC Copenhague, je joue avec les U17 islandais.
Pourquoi avoir choisi Breiðablik ?
Breiðablik m’a donné l’opportunité de jouer pour eux quand j’avais 12 ans. Ils ont entendu dire que j’étais un joueur prometteur donc ils m’ont simplement demandé de venir à Breiðablik pour jouer avec leur équipe de jeunes. J’ai fait un grand bond en avant et maintenant je joue pour l’équipe première.
Pour quelle équipe as-tu joué auparavant ?
J’ai joué pour l’ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar, puisque je suis né aux Îles Vestmann. J’ai bien joué aux Îles Vestmann donc Breiðablik a voulu que je joue pour eux puis ils m’ont vendu au FCK (FC Copenhague) pour une grosse somme d’argent (un peu moins de 50 millions de couronnes islandaises, soit environ 350 000 €).
Pourquoi partir si jeune ?
Je veux jouer un football dur et faire un grand bon en avant pour jouer en dehors de l’Islande. Je pense que je vais pouvoir apprendre un meilleur football au Danemark ; ce n’est pas comme en Islande où nous n’avons pas d’incroyables footballeurs. Je veux faire un grand bon en avant et être un meilleur footballeur.
Pourquoi avoir choisi le FC Copenhague ? As-tu reçu d’autres offres ?
Oui, j’ai eu un essai avec le Torino, en Italie, j’ai eu un essai à Midtjylland et au FC Copenhague. Donc on m’a donné ma chance en Italie et au Danemark mais j’ai choisi le FCK puisque leur équipe de jeunes remportent toujours la Coupe, ils ont une bonne académie et les jeunes joueurs peuvent parfois jouer avec l’équipe première. Donc j’ai vu une opportunité pour moi de jouer dans deux ou trois ans avec l’équipe première.
As-tu parlé avec des joueurs islandais qui jouent là-bas ?
Oui bien sûr, en Islande tout le monde se connaît ! J’ai beaucoup échangé avec Orri Steinn (Óskarsson) qui a presque mon âge et puis j’ai senti que le FCK était le meilleur choix pour moi et la meilleure étape pour moi en tant que footballeur.
Quels paramètres sont entrés en compte dans ton choix ?
Hmm… Peut-être le fait qu’ils m’aient acheté pour une grosse somme d’argent, je suis maintenant le deuxième joueur le plus cher acheté en Islande, derrière Kristian Hlynsson (Ajax Amsterdam). Donc c’est un grand honneur pour moi d’être aussi cher et de savoir qu’ils voulaient vraiment que je vienne. Donc je sais qu’ils feront tout pour moi, et je donnerai tout pour eux.
Tu ne vas pas finir la saison à Breiðablik puisque tu pars au Danemark en juillet, donc qu’attends-tu de ces quelques mois à Kópavogur ?
Je pars maintenant, ce week-end je vais jouer avec l’équipe nationale (trois buts marqués en trois matchs avec les U16) et ensuite j’irai faire un tournoi avec le FCK à Århus, pendant deux semaines donc je ne suis plus vraiment à Breiðablik, Breiðablik sait que je vais dans un autre club. Je m’entraîne avec eux mais je ne vais plus vraiment jouer avec eux.
Donc j’ai probablement joué mon dernier match avec Breiðablik il y a quelques jours (contre l’ÍA Akranes). Très triste…
As-tu des objectifs pour les prochains mois, prochaines années, avec les sélections islandaises de jeunes ? Pour rappel, tu as déjà joué et marqué en U17.
Oui, j’ai déjà joué quatre matchs avec les U17, j’ai marqué un but contre la Finlande et j’ai fait deux passes décisives.
Et oui, bien sûr je veux être le meilleur joueur du monde mais je vais déjà franchir un grand cap pour la prochaine étape. Les années à venir vont être dures et difficiles mais je vais y arriver, je veux devenir un joueur professionnel et je vais le faire, en ayant la bonne mentalité ! Je vais jouer, travailler dur et j’aimerais être l’un des meilleurs joueurs d’Islande.
Tu as déjà un agent avec ICM Stellar Sports, qui s’occupe de toi et comment cela se déroule avec eux ?
Ils ont entendu parler de moi quand j’avais quatorze ans puis ils m’ont offert un contrat dans la foulée et l’an dernier ils m’ont aidé pour tout ce qui concernait mon contrat avec le FCK. Ils sont avec moi depuis le début, ils sont biens pour moi, je pense que c’est une relation parfaite. ICM Stellar Nordic, très bon.
Donc ils te connaissent depuis le début ?
Oui, ils suivent les jeunes joueurs, ils veulent les jeunes joueurs islandais, comme Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, le meilleur jeune joueur Islandais. Donc ils m’ont simplement contacté puisqu’ils voulaient que je sois avec eux. Et la saison dernière dans le championnat islandais U17, j’ai été le meilleur joueur et nous avons remporté le championnat.
Quel est ton poste préférentiel ?
En équipe nationale et avec Breiðablik je joue ailier droit mais au FCK je jouerai buteur. La saison dernière j’ai joué buteur. Je peux jouer ailier gauche, ailier droit ou buteur. Je préfère jouer ailier gauche ou buteur mais parfois je joue ailier droit.
Il y a beaucoup de concurrence à ton poste, en quoi penses-tu pouvoir te démarquer des autres ?
Hmm… Je pense que j’ai une bonne vitesse de pointe, je suis un bon dribbleur et je peux effacer des joueurs en un contre un. Je pense que c’est mon point fort, je suis très bon en un contre un. Donc je joue souvent sur les ailes pour prendre un joueur en un contre un.
Quels sont les points que tu souhaites améliorer dans le futur ?
Je veux être un meilleur joueur de tête, améliorer mon jeu aérien. Je suis un jeune joueur, j’ai eu seize ans la semaine dernière, donc j’apprends simplement à devenir un meilleur joueur ! Donc je suis meilleur en un contre un qu’en jeu de tête je pense.
Quels sont tes modèles dans le football ?
Je pense Cristiano (Ronaldo), simplement sa façon de travailler, sa mentalité… Pour moi Cristiano est au-dessus de Messi, de part sa mentalité lors de son premier passage à (Manchester) United. Sa mentalité est de travailler dur, toujours travailler, tu n’es jamais assez bon, tu peux toujours plus t’entraîner.
Et un joueur islandais ?
Hmm… Pas Gylfi Sigurðsson puisqu’il a fait de très mauvaises choses. Hmm… Peut-être Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson. Pour moi c’est le meilleur joueur islandais et il travaille dur. C’est un très bon ailier droit.
Quelle est ton équipe préférée ?
Manchester United, je suis vraiment un grand fan de Manchester United. Je suis aussi les équipes de jeunes.
Ton objectif est de jouer pour eux un jour ?
Oh oui bien sûr, ce serait… Si j’avais une chance de jouer pour Manchester United, oh oui je la saisirais !
Qui sont tes meilleurs amis dans le football ?
Mon meilleur ami s’appelle Stígur Diljan (Þórðarson). Il joue pour Víkingur. Nous jouons dans la même catégorie en équipe nationale (Islande U16).
As-tu des frères et sœurs qui pratiquent un sport également ?
J’ai trois sœurs, c’est vraiment dur pour moi, je suis le seul garçon ! Je suis le deuxième de la famille. Une de mes sœurs est joueuse de handball professionnelle en Islande.
Un de tes parents a-t-il pratiqué un sport à haut niveau ?
Oui, mon père était basketteur professionnel en Islande, il a joué pour l’équipe nationale. Il a essayé de me mettre au basket-ball mais je n’ai pas aimé, j’aime seulement le football.
As-tu pratiqué d’autres sports auparavant ?
Oui, j’ai joué au handball aux Îles Vestmann, j’étais très bon, j’ai été à un entraînement national de handball. J’étais avec environ vingt-cinq personnes.
Alors, pourquoi avoir choisi le football ?
Parce que j’ai vu une meilleure chance pour moi d’être plus professionnel et mes amis préféraient le football et je jouais simplement plus au football.
A quel âge as-tu choisi le football ?
A quatorze ans.
Suis-tu un peu le championnat français ?
Oui, avec Mbappe, Neymar et Messi, je regarde beaucoup de matchs du PSG. C’est mon équipe française préférée.
Enfin, as-tu un message pour nos lecteurs ?
Je ne sais pas quoi dire… Je vais être un bon footballeur !

Born in 2006, the one who is already nicknamed « Magic » Galdur is considered one of the greatest Icelandic talents of his generation. To begin, can you introduce yourself?
My name is Ásgeir Galdur Guðmundsson, I’m 16 years old, playing for Breiðablik but in the summer playing for FC Copenhagen, I’m playing with Icelandic U17’s national team.
Why did you choose Breiðablik?
Breiðablik gave me the opportunity to play for them when I was like 12 years old. They heard I was a promising player so they just asked me to come to Breiðablik and play for their youth team. So I just took a big step up and now I play for the first team.
For which team did you play for before ?
I played for ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar, because I was born in the Westman Islands. I was playing well in Westman Islands so Breiðablik wanted that I play for them and then Breiðablik sold me out for FCK for a lot of money (a little bit under 50 millions ISK, around 350 000 €).
Why leave so young?
I want to play a hard football and take a big step up to play outside from Iceland. I think I can learn a better football in Denmark ; it’s not like in Iceland, we have not great footballers. I want to take a big step up and be a better football player.
Why did you choose FC Copenhagen? Did you have any other offers?
Yeah, I had a chance, I went to a try with Torino, in Italy and I also got a try with Midtjylland and also FC Copenhagen. So I’ve got a chance in Italy and Denmark but I’ve chosen FCK because their youth guys always win the Cup, they have a good academy and the young guys can play sometimes with the first team. So I saw like a chance I could play with the first team in two or three years.
Have you spoken with any Icelanders who play there?
Yeah of course, in Iceland everybody knows each other ! I’ve chatted a lot with Orri Steinn (Óskarsson) who’s next to my age and then I thought FCK would be the best choice for me and the best step for me as a football player.
What parameters came into your choice ?
Errr… Maybe because they bought me for a lot of money, and now I’m the second most expensive player sold from Iceland, behind Kristian Hlynsson (Ajax Amsterdam). So it’s a huge honnor for me to be that expensive and to know they wanted me to come to them so much. So I know they will gonna do everything for me, I will do everything for them too !
You’re not going to finish the season in Breiðablik since you’re going to Denmark in July, so what do you expect from these few months in Kópavogur?
I’m going now, this week-end to play a national game and then I’m going to a tournament with FCK in Århus, for two weeks so it’s like I’m not much at Breiðablik, Breiðablik knows that I’m going to another club. I’m training with them but I’m not gonna play so much with them.
So it was probably my last game with Breiðablik a few days ago (against ÍA Akranes). Really sad…
Do you have any goals for the next months, next years, with the Icelandic youth teams? As a reminder, you have already played and scored in U17.
Yeah, I played already four games with U17 team and scored a goal against Finland and I’ve got two assists too.
And yeah of course, I want to be the best player in the world but I’m just gonna take a big step up for the next stage. Next years are gonna be difficult and hard but I’m gonna do it, I want to be a professional and I’m gonna do it, just with a good mentality and everything ! I’m gonna play, work hard and I would be one of the best players of Iceland.
You already have an agent with ICM Stellar Sports, who is looking after you and how is it going with them?
They heard of me when I was fourteen then they offered me a contract and last year they helped me for everything with FCK. They’re with me from the first time, they’re good for me, it’s like a perfect relationship I think, ICM Stellar Nordic, really good.
So they know you since the beginning ?
Yeah, they scout young guys, they want the Icelandic young guys, like Ísak Bergmann Jóhannesson, the best Icelandic young guy. So they just contacted me from the beginning because they wanted me to be with them. And last year, in U17 Icelandic league, I was the best player of the league, we won the league.
What is your preferred position?
In the national team I played right wing, in Breiðablik I played right wing, but in FCK I’ll play striker. Last year I played as a striker. I can play left wing, right wing or striker. I prefer play left wing or striker but sometimes I play right wing.
There is a lot of competition in your position, how do you think you can stand out from the rest?
Errr… I think I’ve a good pace, I’m a skill full player and I can pass players I’m good in one on one. I think that’s the best part of me as a player, I’m really good at one on one. So I often play on the wings just to take a man at one on one.
What are the areas you want to improve in the future?
I want to be better at heading a ball, be better with the head. I’m just a young guy, I just turned sixteen the last week, so I’m just learning to be a better player ! So I’m better at one on one or something like that than headers I think.
Who are your role models in football?
I think Cristiano (Ronaldo), just how he works, his mentality and something… For me Cristiano is over of Messi, just because of his mentality at (Manchester) United time. His mentality is hard work, always working, you’re never too good, you can always train more.
And an Icelandic player ?
Errr… Not Gylfi Sigurðsson because he did really bad things. Errr… Maybe Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson. For me he’s the best player in Iceland and also working. He’s a really good right winger.
What’s your favorite team?
Manchester United, I’m really a good Manchester United’s fan. I follow also the youth teams.
Is your goal to play for them one day?
Oh yeah of course, that would be… If I’d get a chance to play with Manchester United, oh yeah I’m gonna take it !
Who are your best friends in football?
My best friend’s name Stígur Diljan (Þórðarson). He plays for Víkingur. We play in the same national team (Iceland U 16).
Do you have siblings who play sports as well?
I’ve just three sisters, so it’s really hard for me, I’m the only boy ! I am the second one of the family. One of my sisters is a professional handball player in Iceland.
Did your parents practice professional sport ?
Yeah, my dad was a professional basket-ball player in Iceland, he played for the national team. He tried to put me to basket-ball but I didn’t like it, I just like football.
Have you played any other sports before?
Yeah, I played handball in Westman Islands, I was pretty good, I went to a national training of handball. I was with like twenty-five people.
So why did you choose football?
Because for me I saw a better chance to be more professional and my friends liked more football and I just played more football.
At which age did you chose football ?
At fourteen.
Do you follow the French league a bit?
Yeah, like Mbappe, Neymar and Messi, I watch a lot of PSG games. It’s my favorite French team.

I don’t know what to say… I’m gonna be a good footballer !
