Aux portes d’un exploit monumental de pouvoir disputer une phase de groupes d’Europa League, le KÍ Klaksvík se déplace ce soir en Irlande pour affronter le Dundalk FC pour un barrage déjà historique pour un club féringien. À l’occasion, nous avons pu échanger avec un des acteurs qui sera sur la pelouse ce soir pour espérer réaliser cet exploit, Jesper Brinck. Un défenseur central danois de 31 ans, qui évolue au sein de ce club des Îles Féroé depuis maintenant 1 an et demi.
Au cours de cet entretien, Jesper Brinck a pu revenir pour nous sur son parcours au Danemark et sur ce qu’il réalise actuellement aux Îles Féroé avec ses partenaires depuis son arrivée en 2019 avec ce parcours Européen complètement fou après la victoire 6-1 face au champion géorgien, le Dinamo Tbilisi, jeudi dernier. Mais également sur la rencontre de ce soir dont il s’est préparé sans appréhension particulière, prêt à tout donner comme à chaque rencontre :

Comment se sont passés tes débuts footballistiques à Esbjerg et tes années au Danemark à Varde IF puis Brabrand IF en D4/D3/D2 ? Tu as toujours voulu être footballeur ?
En fait, je n’ai jamais fait mes débuts avec Esbjerg en équipe première. Même si j’ai joué toutes mes années de jeunesse là-bas et joué avec la deuxième équipe en D3. Je suis allé à Varde pour jouer pour mon ancien entraîneur d’Esbjerg et je voulais être dans un endroit où ils m’aimaient plus en tant que joueur.
Comme je voulais étudier, j’ai ensuite déménagé à Aarhus et en même temps j’ai signé un contrat avec le club de Brabrand. J’ai passé un moment formidable à Brabrand avec un groupe fantastique de gars. Nous avons été promus en D2 après une très bonne saison. Lors de cette saison, j’ai réalisé que je voulais jouer au plus haut niveau possible pour moi. J’ai toujours voulu jouer au football et cela vient en fait de mon père qui a également joué au football.
En janvier 2019, tu t’es engagé avec le KÍ Klaksvík aux Îles Féroé, comment s’est présenté cette opportunité et avez-tu déjà pensé à y évoluait avant ?
L’entraîneur de Klaksvik m’a appelé à l’improviste un lundi pour me demander si j’étais intéressé pour une discussion sur le football. J’ai accepté et nous avons parlé pendant des heures. Il a présenté un projet vraiment ambitieux et je l’ai rejoint. Avant cela, je n’avais jamais pensé à aller aux Féroé.
Première année avec le KI et vous êtes directement champion, après 20 ans de disette pour le club, ainsi qu’un bon parcours en Europa League avec 2 tours passés, comment as-tu vécu cette année 2019 sur l’archipel ?
Ma première saison était tellement bonne. Nous avons remporté le championnat, nous avons bien tourné en Europe et j’étais dans l’équipetype de l’année. Je ne pense pas que j’aurais pu demander plus. J’étais vraiment vraiment satisfait de la façon dont cela s’est déroulé.
La saison 2020 semble également bien lancé avec un titre en Super Coupe et une lutte pour le titre avec l’HB Torshavn, comment vois-tu cette saison pour le moment et votre projection pour la suite où vous êtes notamment en fin de contrat à la fin de l’année ?
2020 est une autre saison passionnante. Avec un championnat et une ligue européenne en jeu. Je pense que c’est ce dont vous rêvez en tant que footballeur.
En ce qui concerne le futur, je viens de signer un nouveau contrat, dont je suis super content de pouvoir continuer à travailler avec des joueurs et un personnel incroyables à Klaksvik.
Pouvoir jouer la Coupe d’Europe doit être un sacré luxe en tant que footballeur semi-professionnel, comment appréhendes-tu à chaque fois ces matchs et ressent-tu une certaine effervescence sur l’archipel lors de ses rencontres ?
Les coupes européennes sont quelque chose de spéciales et que j’apprécie à chaque fois. En jouant, je le vois à 100% comme un match normal sans une excitation particulière.
Mais avec le recul, ce sont les matchs qui donnent quelque chose de plus. Tout le monde au sein et autour du club sait que ce sont des événements spéciaux, que vous pouvez sentir autour de la ville et tout.
Cette année, tu as pu jouer un tour préliminaire de LDC face au champion Suisse en faisant bonne figure, et là jeudi dernier cette incroyable victoire 6-1 face au champion géorgien pour devenir le 1er club féringien à disputer les barrages d’Europa League. Peux-tu nous raconter comment c’était ?
Cette «aventure» européenne a été incroyable. Tant de moments d’excitation! C’est un peu difficile cependant de trouver les mots pour cela en fait. « Fantastique » pourrait le décrire au mieux.
Nous sommes heureux et fiers de ce que nous avons accompli. Mais j’espère que ce n’est pas la fin de l’aventure. Nous voulons faire encore plus, et nous n’en sommes en aucun cas satisfaits pour le moment.
Jeudi soir, cela sera le match le plus important de ta carrière actuellement face à Dundalk, comment appréhendes-tu personnellement et collectivement cette rencontre ?
Nous essayons vraiment de ne pas exagérer la rencontre. C’est toujours du football, rien de plus. Cela reste 11 contre 11. Nous jouons pour gagner et fairons de notre mieux. Nous connaissons nos forces et voulons les utiliser pour obtenir le résultat dont nous avons besoin.
Qu’est ce qui t’as le plus impressionné ici aux Îles Féroé et que fais-tu en dehors du football sur l’archipel ? J’ai lu que tu avais fait de longues études au Danemark en rédigeant notamment une thèse et que tu étais commercial pour ton ancien club en trouvant des sponsors, cela est encore le cas ici ?
Le plus surprenant est la gentillesse du peuple féringien. Ils sont si gentils et aimables. Tout est possible et ils vont au-delà des attentes pour vous aider. D’autres choses seraient les fans. Ils sont tellement passionnés – et nous les ADORONS absolument à Klaksvik.
J’ai un travail à temps partiel, qui donne un rythme dans ma vie quotidienne. Je travaille en tant que partenaire RH dans une entreprise locale.
Quelles sont tes caractéristiques en tant que défenseur central, avec tes points forts et axes de progression ? Tu évolues aussi parfois sur un côté ?
Je dirais que ma vitesse en tant que défenseur sépare la mienne des autres. Être fort et rapide aide. Le plus grand domaine d’amélioration pourrait se diriger. J’ai joué à l’arrière ces derniers matchs, donc c’est assez nouveau pour moi, mais attaquant et faire des passes décisives (ndlr : comme lors du dernier match contre le Dinamo Tbilisi) est vraiment amusant.
Tu as fait appel à un entraîneur personnel et physiothérapeute il y a quelques années, qu’est-ce que cela t’as apporté ? On peut voir une grande évolution physique de ton côté au fil des années, le travail a payé avec beaucoup de fitness, quel est ton secret s’il y en a et le ressent-tu sur le terrain ?
J’ai appelé ces personnes car je sentais que c’était un domaine dans lequel je pouvais faire mieux je connaissais heureusement un «expert» dans le domaine. Je pense que cela m’a beaucoup aidé. Savoir aussi quoi manger et quand et quelle fitness faire aussi.
Le travail acharné et le dévouement sont le secret. Ce n’était pas vraiment facile d’en arriver là. Je dirais que la force aide beaucoup en tant que défenseur.
Au Danemark, tu étais capitaine à Braband, cela fait partie de toi d’avoir une âme de leader ? Et cela est important pour toi de prendre la parole avant chaque match et encore plus lors des grands événements comme jeudi soir ?
Être un leader est en fait quelque chose dans lequel j’ai grandi, car j’étais assez timide en tant que personne. C’est toujours le cas parfois. Mais être capitaine m’a beaucoup forcé à mûrir.
Parler avant les jeux n’est vraiment pas mon truc ou mon rôle. Notre capitaine actuel le fait. Je parle juste avec les gars pour m’assurer qu’ils sont détendu. Quand les matchs commencent, je me mets en marche et je prends en charge la défense et j’essaie d’organiser l’équipe.

On the verge of a monumental feat to be able to play in a Europa League group stage, KÍ Klaksvík travel to Ireland tonight to face Dundalk FC for an already historic play-offs for a Faroese club. On the occasion, we were able to exchange with one of the actors who will be on the lawn tonight to hope to achieve this feat, Jesper Brinck. A 31-year-old Danish central defender, who has been playing for this Faroe Islands club for a year and a half now.
During this interview, Jesper Brinck was able to come back for us on his journey in Denmark and what he is currently doing in the Faroe Islands with his partners since his arrival in 2019 with this completely crazy European course after the 6-1 victory against to Georgian champion Dinamo Tbilisi last Thursday. But also on the meeting this evening for which he prepared without any particular apprehension, ready to give everything as at each meeting.
How were your footballing debuts at Esbjerg and your years in Denmark at Varde IF then Brabrand IF in D4 / D3 / D2? Have you always wanted to be a footballer ?
I actually never got my debut for Esbjerg on the best team. Eventhough I played all my youth years there and playing with the second team i D3.
I went to Varde to play for my former Coach of Esbjerg and wanted to be in a place were they liked me more as a player.
As a wanted to study, i moved to Aarhus and at the same time signed a contract with Brabrand. I had an amazing time in Brabrand with a fantastic Group of guys. We got promoted in D2 after a really good season. That season I realised that I wanted to play at the highest level possible for me. I always wanted to play football and that actually comes from my dad who also played football.
In January 2019, you joined KÍ Klaksvík in the Faroe Islands, how did this opportunity come about and have you ever thought about playing in it before ?
The coach of Klaksvik called me out of the blue one monday, asking if I was interested in a talk about football. I agreed and we talked for hours. He presented a really ambitious project and I joined. Before that – it had never crossed my mind to go to the Faroes.
First year with KI and you are directly champion, after 20 years of scarcity for the club, as well as a good trip in the Europa League with 2 laps passed, how did you experience this year 2019 on the archipelago ?
My debut season was just so good. We won the Championship, did well in Europe and I was on the team of the year. I dont think I could have asked for more. Really really satisfied with how it played out.
The 2020 season also seems to have started well with a Super Cup title and a title fight with HB Torshavn, how do you see this season for the moment and your projection for the continuation where you are notably at the end of the contract at the end of the year ?
2020 is yet another exciting season. With a Championship and Europe League on the line. I think thats what you dream of as a footballer.
Regarding the furture, I actually just signed a new contract, for which I am super happy. As I get to continue to work with amazing players and staff in Klaksvik.
Being able to play the European Cup must be a sacred luxury as a semi-professional footballer, how do you approach these matches each time and do you feel a certain excitement on the archipelago during his meetings ?
European cups are a special thing and I enjoy it each and every time. While playing it is 100% on seeing it as a normal game. And dont hype it up.
But looking back – those are the games that gives something extra. Everyone in and around the club know these are special events, so you sense i around the town and everything.
This year, you were able to play a preliminary round of the LDC against the Swiss champion with a good figure, and there last Thursday this incredible 6-1 victory against the Georgian champion to become the 1st Faroese club to compete in the Europa League play-offs. Can you tell us how it was ?
This european “adventure” has been increditable. So many moments of excitement! Its a bit though to find the Words for it actually. Fantastic might best describe it.
We are happy and proud of what we have done. But hopefully this is not the end of the road. We want to do even more, and are not in anyway satisfied with this as of now.
Thursday night, it will be the most important match of your career at the moment against Dundalk, how do you personally and collectively apprehend this meeting ?
We really try to not hype the game. It is still football, nothing more. It still 11 vs 11. We play to win, and do your best. We know out strengths and want to use them to get the result we need.
What impressed you the most here in the Faroe Islands and what do you do besides football on the archipelago? I read that you studied for a long time in Denmark, including writing a thesis and that you were commercial for your old club by finding sponsors, is that still the case here ?
The most surprising is the kindness of the faroese people. They are so nice and kind. Everything is possible and they go beyond expectations to help you. Other things would be the fans. They are so passionate – and we absolutely LOVE them i Klaksvik.
I have a part time job, with gives a rythm in my everyday life. Working as a HR Partner in a local business.
What are your characteristics as a central defender, with your strengths and areas for improvement? Do you also sometimes move on one side ?
I would say my speed as a defender seperates my from the others. Being strong and fast helps/biggest area of improvement might be heading.
I have played fullback these last games so thats quite new for me, but atracking and making assist (ndlr : like in the last match against Dinamo Tbilisi) is real fun.
You called in a personal trainer and physiotherapist a few years ago, what did that help you? You can see a big physical evolution on your side over the years, the work has paid off with a lot of fitness, what is your secret if there is and do you feel it on the pitch ?
I called in these people as I felt I was an area where I could do better and fortunately knew an “expert” within the area. I think it helped me a lot. Know what and when to eat and which fitness to make as well.
Hard work and dedication is the secret. Not really an easy was to get through. Strength helps quite a bit as a defender I would say.
In Denmark, you were captain at Braband, is it part of you to have the soul of a leader? And is it important for you to speak before every game and even more during big events like Thursday night ?
Being a leader is actually something I have grown into, as I was quite shy as a person. Still is sometimes. But being captain forced me to mature a lot.
Speaking before games is really not me thing or role. Our current captain does that. I just smalltalk with the guys making sure they are relaxed.
When the games starts I normally switch on and taking charge of the defence and trying to organize the team.
